Youth Confirmation

In the sacrament of Confirmation, we celebrate the completion of Baptismal grace and continue to lay the foundations of every Christian life that was begun in Baptism and continued in Eucharist. Confirmation gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to bear witness to Jesus Christ by word and deed.

The Seal of the Spirit, Regulations and Guidelines for Confirmation, is the document we follow for the preparation program.  Preparation is divided into two categories, remote and immediate, with emphasis on ongoing growth in faith and understanding. The remote stage requires a minimum of one year’s consistent participation in TYM programs prior to entrance into immediate preparation. The immediate preparation is to provide for full, conscious and active participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community.

Components for immediate preparation

  • The resourcing of families with the opportunities for formation and materials for faith sharing
  • Faith sharing opportunities between candidate and sponsor
  • Celebration with the parish community
  • 9-12 hours of catechesis
  • Involvement in service and a continued sharing of the church’s social mission
  • A retreat experience
  • Opportunities for prayer and worship
  • An interview with a member of the pastoral staff

All high school students are invited to begin preparation for Confirmation. Consistent attendance at TYM during the ninth grade (remote preparation), qualifies teens to begin immediate preparation in tenth grade.  A parent/candidate orientation will be scheduled in November of their tenth grade year and a Confirmation Handbook and calendar will be distributed. Confirmation is celebrated during Mass at Holy Family in the fall after completion of all program components.  For more information, please contact Caroline Rohr (301-473-4800) in the parish office.
